From the Nemasket Gazette, 19 Dec. 1857:
"In North Middleboro, 20th inst., Mrs. Lucinda P., wife of Elijah Alden, aged 62 years, -- months"
"In North Middleboro, 18th inst., Mrs. Mary B. Shaw, wife of Ebenezer Shaw, in her 60th year.
How solemn and yet how pleasant the reflections on this dispensation of divine providence. Mrs. Shaw was early endowed with qualities which rendered her peculiarly amiable. In life she manifested an unusual gentleness, meekness, and loveliness; but more fully did every humble, peaceful and christian grace illuminate her pathway, after the glorious work of grace, which was enjoyed in the place under the ministry of that faithful servant of Christ, Rev. P. Colby, in 1824. In this work she was
deeply interested and gave herself first to Christ and afterward to the church. In her walk before the world, she ever exhibited much of the power of sovereign grace, in moulding her soul in the image and likeness of her blessed Redeemer, and this eminently qualified her for all the relations of life. Before the world, her family, and the church, her humble, quiet, and
peaceful walk manifested much of the evidence of Christ the King of Glory reigning within, and reflecting his own image and likeness in her life and conversation, and especially that overcoming faith, displayed so vividly in her last months, preparing her to endure patiently all the alotments of divine providence, under her last painful and forlorn disease (scirrhus of the stomach) to converse about, and arrange her own funeral, and to meet her last enemy with so much composure and pass his iron gate so fearlessly to be forever with the Lord. - In all these respects her faith shone conspicuously."
